Balanced Phase Readings Do Not Prove Low Neutral Current
By Highidea Power · 23 October 2026 · 3 min read

In a three-phase, four-wire system serving phase-to-neutral nonlinear loads, equal phase RMS currents do not prove that neutral current is small. Fundamental components and harmonic components can combine differently. Keep the neutral measurement and waveform content visible, and have the electrical designer assess the actual conductor, distribution and protection arrangement. Do not reduce or disconnect a neutral based on a balanced-looking dashboard.
State the system boundary first
This question concerns a neutral-bearing arrangement with relevant phase-to-neutral loads. A three-wire circuit without that neutral is a different boundary. Identify the actual output configuration, load connections and measured conductors from the approved drawings.
The behavior also depends on the waveforms, not only on the three displayed magnitudes. Equal RMS values say that an effective quantity is equal; they do not show the relative harmonic components or their phase relationships.
A three-phase UPS total rating and a permitted load-imbalance statement do not independently establish neutral-conductor suitability for every connected load mix.
Why some components cancel and others add
For a balanced sinusoidal set, the fundamental phase-current components cancel in the neutral under the corresponding ideal assumptions. Nonlinear single-phase loads can introduce harmonic currents. Fluke explains that triplen components, such as third, ninth and fifteenth harmonics, can add in the neutral instead of cancelling in a four-wire system.
That does not mean every load produces the same spectrum or that all odd harmonics add in the same way. Preserve the measured spectrum and the actual topology. Do not apply a universal multiplier from an example to size a real neutral.
Work a deliberately simplified component example
Assume an ideal balanced set with a 10 A RMS fundamental component in each phase. Now assume each phase also contains a 3 A RMS third-harmonic component and that those third-harmonic components are aligned in the neutral. Assume no other components.
Each phase's total RMS current is √(10² + 3²) ≈ 10.44 A. The fundamental components cancel under the assumptions, while the aligned third-harmonic components total 9 A RMS in the neutral. The phase readings are equal, yet the neutral current is not zero.
These are invented waveform components, not Highidea measurements, permitted limits or a conductor-design recommendation. Real systems can have imbalance, other harmonics and different relationships requiring a suitable measurement and engineering model.
Keep four evidence questions separate
Question | Evidence needed |
|---|---|
Are phase loads balanced? | Comparable simultaneous phase observations and the relevant definition of balance. |
What flows in the neutral? | An appropriate measurement of the actual neutral under the required task. |
Why does it flow? | Waveform/spectrum, load mix, phase relationships and approved system topology. |
Is the arrangement acceptable? | Applicable equipment limits, conductor/protection design, installation conditions and competent approval. |
One positive answer cannot substitute for all four. A measured current also does not by itself approve thermal conditions, terminations or protection.
Ask for a safe investigation, not a wiring shortcut
Have qualified personnel plan measurement access and the applicable instrument/method. Preserve the operating scenario, mode, load inventory, values, units and time. A daytime low-load survey may not represent the simultaneous electronic task required during an outage.
Do not disconnect a neutral, create an unbalanced live test, substitute protective earth for return current or change conductor size from this explanation. Fault finding and corrective design belong to the responsible electrical team.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do equal phase amperes prove waveform balance?
No. RMS magnitudes do not show every frequency component and phase relationship.
Is neutral current always caused by a UPS fault?
No. Connected-load waveforms and the complete distribution arrangement need investigation before assigning a cause.
Can an input-harmonic percentage answer the output-neutral question?
It describes a different boundary and metric. Use evidence for the actual output and neutral task.
