Comparing DC/DC Ripple and Noise: Match the Measurement Conditions

By Highidea Power · 24 October 2026 · 4 min read

Conceptual converter, separate ripple sculptures, framing objects and a blank comparison folio.

Compare converter ripple and noise only after matching amplitude definition, bandwidth, measurement boundary, operating conditions and any external filtering. A smaller millivolt figure can describe a different test arrangement rather than a better result for your cabinet. Ask for the complete measurement conditions with the number.

Begin with the receiving equipment

A sensitive control or measurement device may need a particular quality of DC supply at its input. Identify that requirement before ranking converters. Output accuracy, dynamic excursions, ripple and system EMC are related to supply quality but describe different questions.

Highidea's RP range provides DC/DC conversion routes for industrial applications. Share the connected equipment's supply requirements alongside its normal and changing demand. A well-defined output requirement helps the configuration enquiry focus on the performance that matters, without turning a component-level noise headline into a promise about the complete installation.

Read beyond the millivolt value

A ripple specification may use peak-to-peak voltage; another document may use RMS. The bandwidth and observation method determine which components contribute to a reading. Input voltage, load, temperature and added output components can also affect the comparison.

RECOM's datasheet-parameter chapter gives a useful example: a smaller published ripple value can include external capacitors, while a larger value may be specified without those components. The numbers are not a fair ranking until the test arrangements are understood. A filter may be appropriate, but its inclusion should be explicit in the offered configuration and performance basis.

Work a conditional comparison

Imagine two hypothetical offers. Offer A lists 50 mV peak-to-peak with an external filtering arrangement. Offer B lists 100 mV peak-to-peak without that arrangement. The figures alone do not establish which meets the equipment requirement in the final cabinet.

Request the same operating point and agreed measurement basis from both suppliers. If the project will retain the specified filter, include its identity and applicable integration conditions. If it will not, do not use the filtered figure as the unfiltered product's result. These invented figures illustrate the comparison problem; they are not RP ratings or acceptance thresholds.

A filter change can also introduce a separate design question. Our capacitive-startup guide helps keep added output capacitance and startup demand visible rather than treating filtering as a free improvement.

Use a measurement-basis card

Define the intended report before commissioning a measurement. The responsible supplier and qualified test party should agree the actual method and safe arrangement. Procurement can collect the conditions without prescribing probe connections.

Required field

Information that makes the value comparable

Quantity

Ripple, noise or another specified component; peak-to-peak or RMS and units.

Boundary

Converter terminals or receiving load input, with the actual distribution included.

Instrument basis

Applicable bandwidth and method, stated by the responsible test party.

Operating state

Input, load, temperature and relevant stable or changing condition.

External components

Filter or capacitor identity, arrangement and whether included in the quoted result.

Decision

Required limit, applicable result, unresolved difference and approval owner.

Keep the original report with this card. A copied screenshot without method or operating condition may be useful as an observation, but it leaves the comparison incomplete.

Keep three output-quality questions separate

First, steady output accuracy asks how the average voltage meets its specified range. Second, ripple and noise describe defined variations around that output under the stated method. Third, a load-step response describes the excursion and recovery during a change. A good result in one area does not complete the other two.

Our light-load regulation guide explains why performance coverage must include the required operating states. The same discipline applies here: a result at one load cannot silently become a guarantee throughout standby, startup and full operation.

Port-level EMC tests also have their own limits and arrangements. Do not replace a system emissions requirement with an output-voltage ripple figure, or use an EMC pass to invent a receiving device's DC tolerance. Retain each requirement at its own boundary.

Prepare an actionable RP enquiry

Through our contact page, send the source envelope, output duty, receiving device requirement, intended installation and any proposed filtering. Ask for the exact offered configuration's performance basis. Highidea can discuss the conversion route and the information needed for the project's selection review.

Testing belongs to qualified personnel with an approved safe method. This guide supplies no oscilloscope grounding or probe instruction. Do not attach an earth-referenced instrument to an unfamiliar live circuit or alter protective connections to obtain a cleaner trace.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is one bandwidth correct for every converter comparison?

Use the applicable requirement and product method. A commonly printed bandwidth is not automatically adequate for every receiving device or transient question.

Can I compare peak-to-peak with RMS directly?

They describe different quantities. A valid conversion needs the appropriate waveform and method, not an assumed universal ratio.

Does extra filtering always improve the complete system?

It can change several characteristics. Review the supported arrangement, startup, stability and thermal conditions alongside the intended noise benefit.
