Online Double-Conversion vs Line-Interactive UPS: Which Topology?

Online double-conversion (VFI) continuously rebuilds the output from the DC stage, giving 0 ms transfer and the best power quality — use it for critical or sensitive loads such as servers, medical equipment and power-station controls, or where grid quality is poor. Line-interactive UPS regulates the mains and switches to battery on failure with a small transfer time, at lower cost — use it for less-critical loads. The practical rule is critical or sensitive load → online; cost-sensitive, less-critical load → line-interactive.
The difference in one paragraph
An online double-conversion UPS converts incoming AC to DC and back to AC continuously, so the load always runs off the inverter — there is no transfer when the mains fails, and the output is fully regulated and clean. A line-interactive UPS feeds the load from regulated mains in normal operation and switches to its inverter/battery when the mains fails, which introduces a small transfer time. Both protect against outages; they differ in power quality, transfer time, efficiency and cost.

When line-interactive is enough

The practical rule: if an outage or a power-quality dip would hurt data, safety, product or uptime, specify online double-conversion.
