UPS Modbus Values: Verify Addresses, Data Types and Word Order
By Highidea Power · 24 October 2026 · 4 min read

A successful Modbus response establishes that a transaction returned data, not that the displayed UPS value has been interpreted correctly. Confirm the register table, protocol address, data representation, scaling and unavailable-state rules for the actual card and firmware. Keep the raw response beside the expected engineering value during integration review.
Separate connection success from meaning
A receiving platform may show a plausible voltage while reading the wrong register or applying the wrong scale. Plausibility is useful as a warning check, but it is not a substitute for the manufacturer's register definition. A wrong interpretation can remain unnoticed when equipment operates near its usual state.
Highidea offers monitoring and protocol-integration options on compatible equipment. Provide the intended UPS, card and receiving platform when discussing an integration. Our data-dictionary guide develops point meanings and ownership; this article focuses on the Modbus address and decoding record that makes a particular implementation reproducible.
Record the address convention explicitly
The Modbus Application Protocol Specification V1.1b3 defines protocol data addressing from zero. Its model also distinguishes several data areas and function codes. A number printed in a device register table therefore needs its documented convention before it is entered into a collector.
Keep the table's original reference, the actual request address and the relevant read function in separate fields. Do not apply an automatic offset because another device used one. The manufacturer or integrator should show how the selected table entry becomes the intended request for this implementation.
This distinction also protects control boundaries. Reading a holding register does not authorize writing it. Integration verification should remain within the approved read scope; there is no need to probe write functions to establish the meaning of a reported voltage.
Distinguish byte order from application representation
The protocol specifies big-endian representation for its addresses and data items. A register is a 16-bit word. That statement does not fully define every manufacturer's representation of a larger application value spread across registers.
For a value using several words, ask for the word sequence, signed or unsigned interpretation, integer or other type, scale and any invalid-value convention. A device map supplies these application details. A receiver's convenient default is not evidence that the device uses that default.
Work a raw-to-display example
Suppose a hypothetical device map defines a single unsigned register in units of 0.1 V. A raw value of 540 would then display as 54.0 V. Without that documented scale, dividing by 10 is only a guess. These invented values are an interpretation example, not a Highidea register or voltage specification.
Now suppose the requested point uses several registers. A correct byte interpretation within each word still leaves the application word sequence to be confirmed. Preserve the original response and definition rather than changing receiver settings until the number looks familiar.
Decoding field | Record for one actual point |
|---|---|
Identity | UPS/card, firmware, register-map revision and receiving software. |
Location | Data area, original table reference, protocol address and read function. |
Representation | Register count, byte and word sequence, type, sign and scale. |
Meaning | Unit, observation basis and documented unavailable or invalid states. |
Verification | Authorized raw response, expected interpretation, observed display and reviewer. |
The output of this card is a demonstrated mapping or a named unresolved difference. It is more useful than a screenshot of a plausible dashboard alone.
Retain a diagnostic split
If a response is absent, investigate the authorized communication path. If a response is present but decoding is unresolved, keep that as a representation issue. If the decoded value is old, assess freshness separately. Do not replace missing or stale values with a numeric zero unless the implementation explicitly defines that meaning.
The offline-monitoring guide addresses the wider reporting chain. A working Modbus transaction does not establish alarm delivery, cloud association or automated shutdown; each function needs its own scoped acceptance.
Preserve the accepted mapping and effective date. Card replacement, firmware change or receiver transformation can require rechecking the affected points. Keep the prior record available so an apparent electrical change can be compared with a possible interpretation change.
Prepare the integration enquiry
Send Highidea the intended host/card, receiving-system version, required point list and permitted read scope through our contact page. Request the applicable protocol information and identify the responsible integration owner. No live passwords or secret exports are needed for that first discussion.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does big-endian settle every multi-register value?
No. The application map must define the complete representation, including the relevant word sequence and type.
Can a plausible reading close acceptance?
Use it as one check. Retain a verified source definition and raw-to-display comparison for the actual implementation.
Does register access authorize remote control?
No. Control permissions and safe operating procedures are separate from an authorized read-only mapping review.
